Bharat Ratna Pranab Da

President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee.

India will remember Pranab Da as one the few politicians who was respected across party lines. He was the leader with charisma and has his ideology always along with him. During his long political life, he held many posts during the Congress rule and went on to become the 13th President of India

Below are the few facts to be known about great leader:

  • Pranab Mukherjee was India’s youngest finance minister in 1982 at the age of 47.
  • He was once a professor. In 1963, He had taught Political Science at the Vidyanagar College in South 24 Paraganas, West Bengal.
  • He had also worked as a journalist with a local Bengali newspaper, named Desher Dak.
  • Pranb da introduced to politics in 1969 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who guided him to become a member at the Rajya Sabha.
  • After the demise of Indira Gandhi, Mukherjee quit the Congress and formed his own political party, the Rashtriya Samajwadi Party.
  • In 1984, Mukherjee was voted the Best Finance Minister in the World by Euromoney magazine.
  • He was the only Finance Minister to have presented seven budgets.
  • He was the only Finance Minister to serve the post both, in the Pre-Liberisation and Post-Liberisation eras.
  • He will also go down in history as the only non-prime minister who was the leader of the Lok Sabha for eight years.
  • The former President had written eight books during his lifetime.
  • He was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 2019 by incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • He was also conferred the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2008.
