10 Amazing Facts About the Indus Valley Civilization

Long before smartphones, cars, or even the pyramids of Egypt were built, an incredible civilization flourished right here in the Indian subcontinent. Let’s explore 10 amazing facts about the Indus Valley Civilization!

1. It’s one of the world’s oldest civilizations. The Indus Valley Civilization existed around 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE — that’s over 5,000 years ago!

2. It covered a huge area. The civilization spread across present-day Pakistan and northwest India, covering an area larger than ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia combined.

3. Its cities had incredible planning. Cities like Mohenjo-daro and Harappa had grid-pattern streets, meaning roads crossed each other at neat right angles — just like modern city planning!

4. They had advanced drainage systems. Almost every house had its own bathroom connected to a covered drainage system running beneath the streets — something many ancient civilizations didn’t have.

5. They used standardized weights and measures. Traders used precisely cut cubical stone weights, showing they had an organized system of trade and measurement.

6. Their script remains a mystery. The Indus script has never been fully deciphered by historians, even today! It remains one of archaeology’s greatest unsolved puzzles.

7. They were skilled traders. Indus Valley people traded goods like cotton textiles, beads, and pottery with civilizations as far away as Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq).

8. They loved jewelry and art. Archaeologists have found beautiful beads, bangles, and the famous bronze “Dancing Girl” statue from Mohenjo-daro.

9. They may have invented cotton cultivation. Evidence suggests the Indus Valley people were among the first in the world to grow and weave cotton into cloth.

10. Nobody knows exactly why it declined. Historians believe changes in river patterns, climate change, or shifting trade routes may have caused the civilization’s decline — but the true reason is still debated.

Next time you visit a museum or see ancient pottery, remember — India’s history of clever engineering and city planning goes back thousands of years!
